September moved on and Opieâs life got even busier. She hadnât seen Wendell since the day he came to lunch. Realizing she didnât have the answers, she placed the situation in Godâs hands and did her best not to force the issue. Even though her belief she could help never wavered, there were times when Opie doubted she could get beyond her feelings for him.
âAny word from Prestige?â Opie asked Val over breakfast. They were all struggling with a recent incident concerning the pavilion project that had thrown Russ into a very bad light. He denied sending the contractor the e-mail changing the concrete pour and Opie believed him.
âRuss called to say Randall King is looking into the situation.â
Opie frowned. She knew Val didnât have good feelings about the owner of the architectural firm that employed Russ. âWhat does that mean?â
âIâm sure heâs looking at things from a liability aspect.â
âAny more problems?â She spread a thin layer of jelly on her slice of toast and took a bite.
âNo. Todd says Russ is watching things like a hawk. I think heâs afraid someoneâs out to hurt me and determined they wonât.â
Fear rose up in Opieâs throat, the toast nearly choking her as she considered Valâs words. âWhy havenât you told me this before? Thatâs crazy. What have you done to anyone to cause this?â
âI won the lottery.â
âRight. You won,â she agreed, shoving the plate away. âWhat you do with the money is your concern. You arenât hurting anyone with your plans.â
âBut whoever is behind this feels entitled to share in my wealth. I just hope Russ can prove his innocence. It doesnât look good.â
âWhy did you give him another chance?â
âBecause he asked and gave me a reason to believe I should.â
Opie knew Val cared for Russ a lot and hoped they could work things out.
She hadnât given a lot of thought to work until Susan Boone called again.
âWendell says you refused because you donât have a large enough kitchen?â
âThatâs right.â
âI have an idea. My friend owns a restaurant downtown. Heâs willing to rent the space to you from midnight until around five a.m. Would that work?â
Her suggestion puzzled Opie. âWhy are you going out of your way like this? Surely you know other caterers.â
âWendell says I wonât be disappointed, and I believe him.â
Opie appreciated his support, but she didnât understand why he had gone back to Susan with what sheâd told him. Why was it so important that she cater this event? She weighed the pros and cons and said, âGive me your friendâs number. If we can work things out, Iâll be happy to cater your event.â She scribbled the name and number on a scrap of paper.
âWendell said you did an English tea party for your sister. Would you be willing to do a themed party for me?â
âName your theme, and Iâll plan the menu.â
Opie promised to get back to her as soon as possible. She was able to work a deal with Ken Brown and called to let Susan know.
